New research suggests that patients who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users using such medications need to be cognizant of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a return to starting weight within about one and a half years.
Comparing Approaches
The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally see a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Doctors suggest the way of the jabs explains the heightened weight return.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Stopping of this medication results in appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."
A Chronic Condition?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Testimonies
Users who have discontinued the jabs describe a intense return of cravings.
"It was like a switch activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described an individual.
The struggle is compounded if users have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Growing Use
Recent estimates show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is more common among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success relies on ongoing behavioural changes.
